Centennial Village Landscape Architecture

The Challenge

Centennial Village is comprised of 8 dormitory buildings sited in a way that gives a feel of a small community, yet lacked a common gathering area. Another challenge was flooding due to a large amount of stormwater runoff from the enclosed courtyard area and roofing issues. The flooding issues along with the absence of a gathering space took away from the community feel, which is important in higher-education campus settings.

The Soltesz Solution

To help create a sense of place, Soltesz designed a landscape and recreation plan to enhance the Centennial Village area of the campus. Plans included LID features such as rain gardens throughout the site as part of functional, beautification, and identity improvements to the entire site. Soltesz’s design also creates areas for student seating and gathering to encourage student socializing in addition to improved vehicular and pedestrian circulation and safety. Parking areas have been designed with pervious pavers along with curbs, cistern, and other underground stormwater improvements to address the major flooding issues.
